One year later, American households are paying thousands more due to Trump's inflation, including $123 more on electricity costs last year.

Bucks County Beacon: Thanks to Trump and His Republican Enablers in Congress, the Affordability Crisis in Pennsylvania Worsens
[Cyril Mychalejko, 3/4/26]
"'From rising electric bills to wholesale natural gas prices surging 71% in 2025, it's clear that Donald Trump's cost-raising economic policies have been a total disaster for Pennsylvanians,' said DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta. 'Donald Trump promised to lower costs on Day One. Instead, they've skyrocketed.'
"Kenyatta pointed to Trump's promise to lower energy costs as one glaring example. Trump claimed at a September 2024 'Protecting America Initiative' roundtable in Pennsylvania that 'your energy bill within 12 months will be cut in half, and that's my pledge all over the country.' …
"New data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that electricity costs have risen 14.4% in Pennsylvania. It didn't help that there was a 71% increase in natural gas prices during Trump's first year, so of course utility bills are soaring. …
"'That's why Donald Trump owns this affordability crisis, and families across the Commonwealth are paying the price,' said Kenyatta, who also serves as a state representative in Harrisburg."
Granite Post: NH electricity bills up 11% despite Trump affordability promises
[Colin Booth, 3/4/26]
"Trump is now facing fresh evidence that costs are mounting. He pledged on the campaign trail that energy bills would be 'cut in half' within 12 months, but the latest federal data show New Hampshire's average residential electricity price rose about 11% over the last year.
"In a statement, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin argued that Trump fully owns the New Hampshire energy crisis.
"'Donald Trump continues to break promises he made to Granite Staters …Trump's disastrous economic policies have skyrocketed utility costs, pushing New Hampshire families even more to the brink as they watch their electricity bills go through the roof.' Martin said.
"'Last year, Donald Trump promised that energy bills would be cut in half. Instead, Trump has done more to line the pockets of his billionaire buddies than follow through on his promise to lower energy costs for New Hampshire families.'"

[InsiderNJ Staff, 3/4/26]
"On the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised New Jerseyans that he would lower costs on 'Day One,' but his administration has done everything but. According to new data, electricity costs have spiked 18.4% in New Jersey since Trump took office, underscoring how working families are paying the price for Trump's failed policies every day. …
"'Donald Trump continues to break promises he made to New Jerseyans, especially when it comes to costs. Instead of lowering costs on 'Day One' as he promised, Trump's disastrous economic policies have skyrocketed utility costs, pushing New Jersey families even more to the brink as they watch their electricity bills go through the roof. Last year, Donald Trump promised that energy bills would be cut in half. Instead, Trump has done more to line the pockets of his billionaire buddies than follow through on his promise to lower energy costs for New Jersey families. Make no mistake: Trump owns this affordability crisis. Meanwhile, Democrats are fighting to lower costs for every New Jerseyan.'"
Axios D.C.: D.C. residents revolt over soaring utility bills
[Anna Spiegel, 3/3/26]
"No one expects their bill to double or triple - especially if their energy use hasn't changed.
"Some city residents told lawmakers they're facing brutal trade-offs: risk shut offs, dip into savings, or cut back on groceries and other essentials.
"The big picture: Energy costs in D.C. have surged 93.2% in five years - the largest spike in the country, per advocacy group We Power DC. …

Inside Climate News: Why Electricity Bills Are So High-and How the Blowback Could Hit Trump
[Dan Gearino and Marianne Lavelle, 3/2/26]
"It's not surprising that electricity prices have become a key political issue in the run-up to the November midterm elections, given that Trump campaigned on a promise to cut energy prices by 50 percent within one year, sometimes saying this would include a 50 percent cut to electricity prices. …
"Rising electricity costs are mentioned regularly in email blasts to voters from the Democratic National Committee's 'War Room,' including one on the eve of Trump's State of the Union address. Trump is 'personally causing families in every part of the country to pay higher prices,' wrote DNC Chair Ken Martin. …
"Last November's elections made clear that anger about power prices crosses political fault lines. Not only did Democrats win the New Jersey and Virginia governors' races with campaigns focused on high electricity prices, Democratic candidates also ousted two Republicans from seats on Georgia's Public Service Commission by campaigning against recent rate hikes for Georgia Power."
