Minister Mihai Popșoi meets German counterpart Johann Wadephul in Berlin to discuss support for Moldova’s European path and strengthening bilateral cooperation

5 March 2026, Berlin - During his official visit to Germany, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, held talks with Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, followed by a joint press conference. The discussions reaffirmed the close relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Federal Republic of Germany, based on mutual trust, solidarity, and increasingly deep cooperation at bilateral and European levels.

In his statement, Mihai Popșoi underlined that European integration remains the Republic of Moldova's strategic objective and the direction guiding the current reform agenda.

"European integration is the Republic of Moldova's nation-building project - a firm commitment to peace, prosperity and the rule of law. Germany has been a steadfast supporter of this path, and the support provided, both bilaterally and at European Union level, directly contributes to strengthening our institutions, modernising the economy and reinforcing resilience in a regional context marked by uncertainty," said Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi.

For his part, Johann Wadephul reaffirmed that Germany will continue to be a reliable partner of the Republic of Moldova in its process of closer integration with the European Union and highlighted Berlin's commitment to stability and security in Europe.

"Last year's elections showed that resilience pays off and that the Republic of Moldova is on its way to Europe. The Federal Government expressly supports this, and in the future we will always stand by the Government of Moldova to fulfil this collective desire for freedom and democracy felt throughout the country - a desire we intend to support," said Minister Johann Wadephul.

The two ministers reviewed the current state of Moldova-Germany cooperation and highlighted the importance of development projects implemented in the Republic of Moldova with Germany's support. The steady contribution to the country's modernisation was noted, including projects implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development during 2024-2025, worth over EUR 86 million, focusing on modernising public administration, energy efficiency, infrastructure and the development of the entrepreneurial environment.

The parties welcomed the positive momentum in economic cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Germany, one of Moldova's main economic partners. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi highlighted German investors' interest in the Republic of Moldova and the important contribution of German companies to economic development and job creation. At present, approximately 429 companies with German capital operate in the country.

The importance of cultural and educational cooperation was also noted, including the opening on 19 January 2026 of the Goethe-Institut Liaison Office in Chișinău.
