Since ChatGPT arrived on the scene in late 2022, generative artificial intelligence has rewritten the rules of the classroom and no one quite agrees on what to do about it.

On April 9 at 6 p.m., The University of Toledo's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics invites the public to explore that question alongside one of the scholars thinking hardest about how AI helps and hinders education.

Dr. Logan McCarty, associate dean of science undergraduate education at Harvard University, will deliver the spring Doermann Distinguished Lecture in McQuade Law Auditorium at the UToledo Law Center.

Dr. Logan McCarty, associate dean of science undergraduate education at Harvard University, will deliver the spring Doermann Distinguished Lecture in McQuade Law Auditorium at the UToledo Law Center.

His talk, "In an Age of AI, What Should Students Learn and How Should They Learn It?" draws on his experience designing one of the first broad college courses examining the societal impact of generative AI, as well as his ongoing research into how these tools shape teaching and learning.

The stakes, McCarty argues, extend well beyond academics. AI tools can now draft essays, solve math problems, write computer code and build slide decks in seconds. Entry-level positions in business, law, finance and software face real disruption.

The lecture will challenge the audience to grapple with the rapidly shifting landscape shaped by AI.

A Q&A session will follow the lecture, providing attendees the chance to engage directly with McCarty. Light refreshments will be served at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to all. UToledo faculty, staff, students and alumni are encouraged to attend. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.

Parking will be free in Area 12 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Please note that disability, metered, patient, and reserved spaces remain enforced throughout the evening.
