WASHINGTON, D.C. - As Iranians take to the streets demanding basic freedoms, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, joined a group of colleagues led by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.S. Senator James Lankford (R-OK) in introducing a bipartisan resolution condemning the Iranian regime for suppressing its citizens' right to peacefully assemble and highlighting its long pattern of censorship, intimidation, and violent crackdowns against its own people.
"The United States Senate continues to stand with the Iranian people in their struggle for dignity and basic human rights. I am proud to join this resolution condemning the Iranian regime's brutal violence against its own citizens peacefully protesting, including mass killings, arrests, and torture, and I commend the bravery and resolve of the Iranian people who have risked their safety to pursue freedom and a society unchained from oppression," said Senator Booker.
Joining Senators Booker, Shaheen, and Lankford in co-sponsoring the resolution are U.S. Senators John Boozman (R-AR), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Hoeven (R-ND), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Andy Kim (D-NJ), and Dick Durbin (D-IL).
The resolution outlines the regime's sweeping crackdown since protests began in late December, including mass arrests, internet blackouts, and the killing of peaceful protestors in the streets. It also details Iran's long history of violently suppressing dissent and affirms the Iranian people's right to assemble freely and determine their own future.
