For the sixth year in a row, Portland State University has been ranked No. 1 for Social Mobility in the Pacific Northwest, rising to No. 42 nationally, according to new rankings released by U.S. News and World Report.
Social mobility considers how successful a university is in enrolling and graduating economically disadvantaged students - particularly those who receive Pell Grant funding. At PSU, more than 50 percentof students receive the Pell Grant and the university helps more low-income students raise their economic status than any other college in Oregon.
A college degree has been shown to increase an individual's earning potential by 86 percent more than those whose highest degree is a high school diploma, according to research by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
"At Portland State, our mission has always been to be an engine of opportunity. Our vision for 2030 is to be a national leader in social mobility, and this ranking affirms that our commitment to inclusive learning and student support services is working," said PSU President Ann Cudd. "We're proud to serve students from all backgrounds and provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to find belonging and success on our campus and drive the future of our region."
PSU's strategic goals are centered on providing equitable access to a quality education for all learners. The university offers accessible pathways to degrees that lead to meaningful careers and economic opportunity, solidifying its role as a national leader in social mobility.
