Remembering Robert Portillo, dedicated Soldier, husband, father

VICENZA, Italy - U.S. Army Garrison Italy is remembering U.S. Army Master Sgt. (Ret.) Robert Portillo, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and veteran who died Sunday, Jan. 18, at San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza, Italy. He was 80.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Portillo graduated from John C. Fremont High School in 1963 and joined the U.S. Army. He served for more than 22 years, with assignments in Italy, Germany, the United States and Korea.

After retiring in June 1985, Portillo continued contributing to the Vicenza Military Community through his work with AAFES and later at the Ederle Inn. Italy remained a central part of his life, and he was a familiar and respected presence among both American and Italian friends and colleagues.

Portillo left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Friends and family have been sharing messages on his Facebook pages reflecting his impact. He celebrated his 80th birthday in December. Portillo is survived by his wife, Laura; his daughter, Maria; and his grandchildren, Sean and Sofia.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 14:45 at Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Mauro, Via Europa 34, 36023 Longare (VI), Costozza. Family, friends and community members are welcome to attend.
