Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Barbara Rodríguez has extended the term of Mark Emmons, dean of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) at The University of New Mexico.

Emmons began his term as dean on Aug. 24, 2025, after the departure of Leo Lo, who left UNM for a position at the University of Virginia. His term was originally through January 2027. Emmons' new term will continue through June 30, 2027.

Rodríguez said that a competitive search for the next dean will be launched in fall 2026.

Emmons, a professor and former associate dean for administration and organizational strategy, joined UNM in July 1998. During his time at UNM, he has served in a variety of leadership roles for the college, including interim dean of the college in 2021 until the arrival of Lo later that year.

Earlier this year, Rodríguez appointed Emmons to lead a campuswide steering committee to guide the ethical, strategic use of AI at UNM.
