#StanGrad: Goretti Rodriguez Finds Growth Beyond Her Comfort Zone

Stepping outside her comfort zone and discovering new possibilities made Goretti Rodriguez's college experience one of growth and opportunity.

A criminal justice major from Escalon, Rodriguez earned a 3.94 GPA while creating lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences, including studying abroad in South Korea.

"It allowed me to step outside my comfort zone in a way I will forever be grateful for," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez credits Criminal Justice Faculty Member Jeff Kettering for inspiring her career goal of becoming a probation officer through his real-world experiences and mentorship.

As a student assistant in the University Police Department, Rodriguez's organizational skills, dedication and willingness to help others shone brightly, according to UPD Budget Analyst Dina Malek.

"She is always eager to help anyone who comes her way," Malek said. "I know she will go far in life."

Rodriguez said she chose Stan State because of its close-knit campus environment and the opportunities it offered to build meaningful connections. She also learned the importance of taking advantage of every chance to step outside her comfort zone.

"Everyone tells you these four years pass by in the blink of an eye, and it's true," she said. "Go volunteer, join a club, talk to your classmates and challenge yourself. Those are the experiences that help you grow."

After graduation, Rodriguez hopes to become a probation officer working with at-risk youth while continuing to serve and support her community throughout the Central Valley.

What memories stand out most from your time at Stanislaus State?

"I will always enjoy my time and the memories of studying abroad in South Korea; it was such a memorable experience and allowed me to step outside my comfort zone in a way I will forever be grateful for. Additionally, hanging out with friends late at night, whether it's grabbing food, watching movies together, late-night talks, and overall having moments of spontaneity, are the ones I will remember and will take with me as I walk that stage."

Which faculty or staff member had the greatest impact on you, and why?

"Professor Kettering had the greatest impact on me because of the way he brought real-life experiences into his classes and truly listened to his students in a way that made his classes much more enjoyable and interesting to be in. His extensive knowledge and experience as a probation officer inspired me to become one. Having a professor who listens and is willing to work with you makes the biggest difference, especially when I started my education and had a lot of questions."

What advice would you give to current and future students?

"Some advice I would give is to do the things that make you uncomfortable or push you outside your comfort zone; it's the only way you'll be able to grow and meet new people that'll help build your social and support network. Challenge yourself both in and out of school to make the most of your time and grow. You only get this one time to pursue an undergraduate degree, don't waste it on a maybe or possibly that you'll end up regretting later on."
