(LANSING, MICH) The holidays should bring cheer, not costly surprises. The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding Michiganders that a little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your finances, travel plans, and home this holiday season and beyond.

"From travel delays to package theft, the holidays often bring unexpected challenges," said DIFS Director Anita Fox. "Understanding your insurance coverage, protecting yourself from scams, and knowing where to turn for help can make all the difference. DIFS is here to ensure Michiganders have the resources and information they need to protect what matters most."

DIFS has created a video focusing on common holiday mishaps and how to prepare for them:

  • Stolen or damaged deliveries can quickly ruin the holiday spirit. Some homeowners or renters policies may cover stolen packages, but coverage varies. Before filing a claim, first notify the shipping company of the theft or damage. They may be able to offer a refund, replacement, or credit. It's also a good idea to require signatures for valuable deliveries. If the shipping company is unable to help, check with your insurer to see if your insurance policy offers coverage against packages stolen from your residence.
  • Winter weather can delay flights or cause road accidents. Travel insurance may help recover costs from cancellations or lost luggage. If driving, check to see if your auto coverage includes roadside assistance or rental reimbursement.
  • Decorations, cooking, and candles all raise the risk of fire or damage. Keep decorations away from heat sources and never leave candles or pots on the stove unattended. Review your homeowners or renters insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage for fire, smoke, or water damage.
  • Scammers take advantage of busy shoppers and charitable givers. Use credit cards instead of debit cards for better fraud protection and verify that donation websites are legitimate before giving. Also, remember that scammers often try to get victims to make payments via gift card, PayPal, Cash App, or other popular payment apps. Gift cards are for gifts not for paying taxes, fees or other costs a scammer may ask you to pay.

Consumers with questions or concerns about their insurance or financial services can contact DIFS Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 877-999-6442 or by visiting Michigan.gov/DIFS.
