Consumers Energy Mobilizes Additional Crews to Assist with Ongoing Holiday Weekend Storm Restoration

Jackson, Mich. Saturday, July 04, 2026

Consumers Energy has made significant progress in restoring over 66,000 customers so far impacted by the pre-July 4 storm that left intense destruction in its wake late Friday. The energy provider now has over 400 crews working on getting the lights back on, including over 100 more crews added to the system Saturday.

The recent round of severe weather that hit Friday brought up to 80 mph winds in some areas, causing widespread destruction from the Kalamazoo area to Jackson and Lansing to metro Detroit.

"We continue to prioritize those areas hardest hit by Friday night's storms, said Norm Kapala, one of Consumers Energy's officers in charge for the storm. "These storms packed a major punch that left a path of damage across much of our service territory, and we want to assure our customers that crews will continue to work around the clock over the holiday weekend to ensure a safe and efficient restoration."

Consumers Energy is utilizing all resources at its disposal, including out-of-state contractor crews and its storm trailers and mobile command centers. Resources are being deployed in Allegan, Hillsdale and Adrian to bring supplies and resources closer to hardest-hit areas, speeding up the company's response.

Kapala said Consumers Energy is pushing to restore power to most customers by the end of the weekend.

"We appreciate our customers' patience as many families and communities are celebrating the Independence Day Holiday," Kapala said. "We are committed to providing real-time updates on our outage map where customers can keep up to date with the latest information."

Over 224,000 customers have lost power since Wednesday, amid multiple waves of severe weather.

Keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Stay at least 25 feet away from downed power lines, and report unguarded downed lines by calling 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Consumers Energy reminds people that falsely calling in downed lines slows down the restoration process for everyone.
  • Be alert to crews working along roadsides. Drivers should slow down or stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear so they can go safely past.
  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. Read more guidance on safe generator use here.
  • Consumers Energy will trim or remove trees interfering with electric restoration activities. Once safe to do so, cleanup ofdebris from tree trimming or removal during a storm emergency is the responsibility of individual property owners.
  • In some cases, the mast that holds the electric service wires to a home or business may have been damaged or torn away. Crews will reconnect the wires to a home, but only a licensed electrician can repair or replace a mast or a cable.
