By Andrea O'Neill '06Commonwealth University has always been home to Marquise Isaac-Rivers '16/'17M who earned his bachelor's degree at Mansfield and his master's degree at Bloomsburg. So when asked to volunteer, he didn't think twice.
"Both experiences were amazing," said Isaac-Rivers. "So many alumni helped shape who I am today [and] coming back gave me the chance to pay that forward."
The academic experiences and support he had at both campuses set the foundation for Isaac-Rivers' early success by allowing him to build a diverse set of skills and confidence in leadership roles. Now as the Director of Student Affairs at the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology, Isaac-Rivers volunteered as a presenter for the Sankofa Conference in February of 2025. He has since shared his experiences on topics such as imposter syndrome, self-confidence, and maintaining mental health - topics not typically learned in the academic setting but still vital in professional settings. He says that connecting with students has been "one of the most meaningful parts" of his experience, especially when interacting one on one with students who are eager to learn and excited for their next step.
The experience, Isaac-Rivers says, is "incredible."
"Every year I come back to volunteer, the experience never disappoints," he said. "These students are our future leaders. Sometimes just one conversation can leave a lasting impact on their college experience, their future, and even their lives."
"If I can have a positive impact on even one student, then being involved as an alumnus means the world to me."
