Boston celebrates Independence Day every year, but 2026 is especially meaningful. As the nation marks America's 250th birthday, the milestone holds particular meaning in Massachusetts, where events such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and some of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War cemented the city's place in the nation's founding story.

Check out our guide to celebrating America's birthday, complete with fireworks across the city, Revolutionary War reenactments, historic exhibitions, and waterfront festivals drawing visitors from across New England and beyond.

In the Boston Public Library exhibition Declarations: Printing a New Nation, see eight different original printings of the Declaration of Independence and trace how the news of independence spread out from Philadelphia in the pivotal weeks after July 4, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was ratified.

The exhibit is free and runs through September 13, 2026, at the Leventhal Map and Education Gallery in the Boston Public Library Central Branch, 700 Boylston St., Boston. Find exhibit hours on the Boston Public Library website; please note that the library is closed on July 4.

Boston Harborfest 2026

Boston Harborfest has long served as the city's bridge between celebration and history.

Running from July 2 through July 4, the festival brings activity to Boston's downtown and waterfront through historical reenactments, cultural and musical performances, guided tours, and family-friendly events. Among the most popular traditions is the public reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Old State House on July 4.

Visitors can also explore activities around Faneuil Hall, Long Wharf, and Christopher Columbus Park while learning more about Boston's role in the American Revolution. Many events are free, making it an affordable way to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Wednesday, July 2, through Friday, July 4, 2026, various locations throughout Boston. Most Harborfest celebrations are free; check the event website for information on any entrance fees.

The event starts around 9:15, and the best spots for viewing include Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, Griffin's Wharf (the site of the Boston Tea Party), Fan Pier, and LoPresti Park in East Boston.

Known as Old Ironsides, the historic USS Constitution warship will once again sail through Boston Harbor as part of the city's Fourth of July observances. The event is accompanied by ceremonial activities and remains one of the most photographed traditions of the holiday weekend. This year, the ship is expected to depart from the Charlestown Navy Yard around 10 am, cruise along the harbor for a few hours, and return that afternoon around 1:30 pm.

Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

No Fourth of July tradition is more closely associated with Boston than the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.

On July 4, thousands of people will gather along the Charles River Esplanade and Memorial Drive in Cambridge for the annual concert and fireworks show. Come early to stake your spot in front of the Hatch Shell (the area opens at noon and fills up fast; spectators should bring a blanket, a towel, or some beach chairs). Then, enjoy the free performance, which begins at 7 pm. This year's concert is part of the statewide MA250 initiative and will feature conductor Keith Lockhart (Hon.'04) leading the Boston Pops alongside guest performers Lainey Wilson, Chance the Rapper, and Trombone Shorty.

Once the musicians finish, the fireworks display will begin along the Esplanade, accompanied, of course, by the Pops' rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. If you can't make it out to the Hatch Shell, you can still find great vantage points for the fireworks just about anywhere on the Esplanade, including the docks across from the BU Beach.
