REV. SHARPTON REACTS TO CONVICTION OF ILLINOIS SHERIFF'S DEPUTY FOR FATAL SHOOTING OF SONYA MASSEY

NEW YORK, NY (October 29, 2025) - Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement after an Illinois jury convicted the sheriff's deputy who fatally shot Sonya Massey. Sangamon County deputies arrived at Massey's home after she called 911 on July 6, 2024. Massey, who had a history of mental illness, was fatally shot while moving a pot of boiling water off her stove.

"A jury proved today that those in law enforcement who abuse trust or fatally punish someone in the middle of a mental health crisis must be held accountable. National Action Network rallied behind Sonya Massey's family and her supporters, including a rally I spoke at in Chicago in 2024, because we have seen too many of these instances turn from bad to worse in a heartbeat. Sonya Massey did not deserve to die, along with countless other Black and Brown men and women who needed help with their lives - only to lose it. Even amid an era where the National Guard patrol our streets or civil liberties are stripped away, 12 jurors proved there is still faith in our system.

The fight does not end with this conviction or the deputy's sentencing. It will not end until the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is finally passed. Until those who abuse their power are fully held accountable to lose their pension or their property over the loss of life, we will still be right where we are today. This proves Sonya Massey's life mattered, but it also makes the fire for us to fight for her even brighter."
