Joliet Junior College (JJC) student Alexander Macha has been awarded the highly competitive Provost Scholarship from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Macha is one of 25 high-achieving community college students from Illinois, Florida and Texas selected to receive SIU Carbondale's most prestigious transfer scholarship.
The award will cover full tuition and fees for two years as Macha completes his bachelor's degree in automotive technology. Recipients are selected for their strong academic performance, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities.
"This (scholarship) means to me that despite what you tell yourself, if you truly work hard and put all your effort into something you enjoy, you never know what opportunities will be presented to you," said Macha.
An automotive student at JJC, Macha discovered his passion after exploring several skilled trades. Inspired by his interest in how systems work and encouraged by his mother to continue his education, he found his path in the College's automotive program. He credits his instructors for giving him both the technical knowledge and confidence to succeed at the next level.
During his time at JJC, Macha took on advanced hands-on work, including completing an engine swap alongside a classmate during his freshman year. The experience tested his skills and commitment and ultimately strengthened his confidence in the field.
"This is a larger job and typically given to the sophomore students, so my instructors had a lot of confidence in us to perform the repair properly," said Macha. "Throughout the time we worked on the engine swap there were many obstacles and late nights working on the car, but in the end, we successfully completed the job that our professors gave us."
After transferring to SIU Carbondale, Macha plans to focus on emerging automotive technologies with an interest in electric vehicles. He also hopes to one day become an instructor and share his knowledge with future students.
Macha expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his family and JJC faculty, noting their encouragement and guidance helped make this opportunity possible.
