In a recent interview with Power Engineering, Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) Chief Technology Officer Brandy Johnson discussed two urgent trends in power generation: 1) the need for new capacity to meet demand brought on by AI growth, cloud computing and grid infrastructure stability, and 2) the need to maintain existing units for extended availability.
She highlighted how B&W is uniquely positioned to address both.
Rapidly deployable boiler and steam turbine packages with existing and proven B&W-engineered designs can be used to quickly and reliably power data centers as an alternative to traditional gas turbines that are facing long lead schedules.
At the same time, many plant owners are pushing out plant retirement dates and taking on life-extension projects that require engineering studies, condition assessments, replacement parts and field services.
Optionality, speed-to-market, capacity and stability are all critical factors in project decisions. B&W is making the case that these do not have to be competing priorities.
