SAN DIEGO, CA - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement today on the passing of civil rights icon and labor leader Dolores Huerta:
"San Diego joins our nation in mourning Dolores Huerta, a fearless champion for farmworkers and one of the most consequential civil rights leaders of our time. She dedicated her life to ensuring that the people who feed our country were treated with dignity, paid fairly and heard.
Dolores understood the power of organizing and never stopped demanding justice throughout her long life. Her courage and determination inspired generations to stand up for their rights and recognize their own power to create change.
We will honor Dolores' legacy by continuing her work to build a future with opportunity for all. On behalf of the City of San Diego, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, loved ones and the countless people whose lives she touched."
Mayor Gloria has directed flags at City facilities to be lowered to half-staff in her memory.
