Dollar General Literacy Foundation Launches Sixth Annual The Yellow Glasses Project

Today, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) launched the sixth annual The Yellow Glasses Project, an awareness campaign shining a light on the impact of literacy and its role in creating brighter futures.

Now through International Literacy Day on September 8 (or while supplies last), DG customers can help support literacy and education programs by purchasing yellow sunglasses for $2 each at participating DG stores across the country. All proceeds benefit grant programs of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

With the belief everyone deserves access to a quality education, The Yellow Glasses Project launched in 2020 to further support the DGLF's efforts to give back to public schools, libraries and non-profit organizations in Dollar General's hometowns. To date, the campaign has raised more than $6 million, helping millions of readers in their education journeys.

How to Get Involved
Dollar General shoppers and education programs across the nation are encouraged to help shine a light on literacy by posting photos sporting their yellow glasses. To support the initiative, users can tag @TheYellowGlassesProject on Facebook/Instagram, using #TheYellowGlassesProject,#ShineBrighter and #DollarGeneralLiteracyFoundation hashtags in their posts.

The Impact
With the help of The Yellow Glasses Project, the DGLF most recently awarded a record-setting one-day donation in May 2025 of more than $13.2 million to support adult, family and summer literacy programs across the U.S. The DGLF plans to announce its 2025 youth literacy grant recipients on August 14, 2025, and applications for the 2026 grant cycle are currently scheduled to open in January 2026.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was created by Dollar General's former CEO, Cal Turner, Jr. in honor of his grandfather and DG co-founder, J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate. Since 1993, DGLF has continually supported organizations and their efforts to enhance quality classroom instruction, increase access to literacy programming, advance innovation and inspire the joy of reading. To date, the DGLF has awarded more than $271 million to nonprofit organizations helping more than 23 million individuals advance their education.
