Light up your potential and join our 2025 HV Transmission Apprenticeship Program

To help meet the increasing demand, Downer has launched its first HV Transmission Apprenticeship Program, commencing in early 2025. Successful applicants will receive a Trade Certificate III in Powerline Transmission Construction at the end of the four-year program - enabling them to work on major HV (132kV+) transmission projects anywhere in Australia.

Paul Robinson, General Manager Lines, said the program had been developed to support the next generation of power industry leaders.

"Many of the industry's best and brightest started their careers at Downer and we're thrilled to be offering this exciting opportunity to help build our workforce in readiness for Australia's next transmission boom.

The 2025 intake commences in late January 2025, with the four-year program focussing on Downer's upcoming transmission projects in New South Wales and Queensland. Candidates will be required to work on a Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) or Drive-In, Drive-Out (DIDO) roster, depending on the project.

Combined on the job and off-site learning will take place at registered training organisation, Ergon Energy (Energy Queensland), with all flights and accommodation covered by Downer.

"The core focus of the apprenticeship is to gain the required skills and experience needed to safely and competently string HV transmission lines.

"This also includes gaining experience in assembly and erection of HV transmission structure and aquiring high demand licenses such as Dogging (RB), Rigging (RB or RI) and Elevated Work Platforms (WP).

"Here at Downer, we are proud to offer an attractive remuneration package for our successful apprentice candidates to support them while they are training," said Paul.

Candidates will need to have a current driver's licence and have completed Year 11 or higher, with sound numeracy skills. Being comfortable in regional locations, remote areas and working at heights is also required.

Paul said that the role may also be suitable for people seeking a career change along with a long-term career with plenty of opportunity for progression.

"Downer's transmission team is world-class, with a wealth of knowledge and experience from delivering major HV transmission projects across Australia. We also have a highly supportive, team-orientated culture with a strong commitment to equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion.

"There will be no transition without transmission, so don't miss this rare opportunity to join Downer and play a role in delivering critical energy infrastructure as we support the transition towards a clean energy future," said Paul.

Applications from all regions of Australia will be considered, although candidates from South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland are preferred due to their practical access to the work sites.
