Washington, DC - Today, Donald Trump announced he would begin the formal process of once again withdrawing the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. Trump previously withdrew the U.S. from the nearly 200-nation climate agreement back in 2017, an action President Biden then reversed in 2021.

In response to today's announcement, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

"As the world's most powerful nation and its largest historic emitter, we have a duty to lead the world by example in reducing emissions. As a country and a people committed to protecting this and all future generations, we also have a deep moral obligation to act as boldly as possible to do all we can to stave off the very worst of the climate crisis. Donald Trump's failure to even begin to understand the magnitude of this moment is as clueless as it is cruel. Withdrawal from this agreement is nothing more than a symbol of his selfish and empty acts that only emboldens other nations who see yet another opportunity to lead where we refuse to. At a moment when the world is looking toward the United States to lead and use its power for good, Donald Trump has instead abdicated his responsibilities to save lives and protect our planet."
