Southern University and A&M College mourns the passing of former head football coach and alumnus Gerald Kimble, who died Tuesday, March 31 at the age of 84.

Kimble leaves behind a legacy as both a student-athlete and coach whose impact extended across generations of Southern University students, student-athletes, and alumni.

"Coach Kimble was a true Jaguar - on the field, on the sidelines, and in the community," said John K. Pierre, chancellor of Southern University and A&M College. "His legacy is one of excellence, resilience and service. He inspired generations to believe in themselves and to strive for greatness."

Kimble first etched his name into Southern University history as the quarterback of the 1960 Jaguars, leading the team to a national Black college championship. In addition to his success on the football field, he was also a member of the 1960 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship baseball team - demonstrating his versatility as a student-athlete.

Following a distinguished playing career, Kimble returned to Southern as a coach, where he served as head football coach from 1989 to 1992.

Prior to coaching at Southern, Kimble made an indelible mark on high school football in Louisiana. Most notably, he transformed the Green Oaks High School football program in Shreveport, leading the team to its first winning season, district championship, and playoff appearance in 1979. His career also included a state championship run at Southern University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge in 1996, further cementing his legacy in coaching.

Kimble also remained connected to Southern through his contributions as a football commentator with the Southern University Radio Network, continuing to share his knowledge and passion for the game with Jaguar fans.

Southern University extends its deepest condolences to the Kimble family, former players, colleagues, and all who were impacted by his life and legacy. His contributions to Southern University and the broader community will not be forgotten.
