Happy National Engineer's Week!
During National Engineers Week (February 22-28), we're shining a well-deserved spotlight on the problem-solvers, innovators, and builders who help keep Hillsboro functioning smoothly. It's National Engineers Week, and we're taking a moment to celebrate the engineering minds who are working across our city departments to make Hillsboro an even better place to live, work, and play. From designing cutting-edge infrastructure to ensuring our public services run without a hitch, engineers are the backbone of our city's success.
Let's take a closer look at how engineers are shaping Hillsboro, one department at a time!
When you think of engineers, chances are you're imagining the folks at the heart of our Public Works Department. These engineers specialize in a variety of fields from water resources and environmental engineering to traffic and transportation engineering. They're the ones behind our roads, sanitary sewer and stormwater systems, facilities, and all things infrastructure. Whether it's designing a safer multimodal transportation system, maintaining over 260 miles of our roadways or keeping the storm drains and sewer lines flowing, engineers are working non-stop to keep Hillsboro looking and functioning its best. You can thank them the next time you cross a bridge or see a newly paved road-it's their careful planning and expertise that make it happen.
Have you ever cruised down a perfectly timed streetlight corridor or walked safely across a newly added pedestrian crossing? That's thanks to the engineers working in our Transportation division. These experts are responsible for keeping our city's roads safe, efficient, and, above all, easy to navigate. Whether they're mapping out future transit routes or ensuring the smooth flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, transportation engineers are working tirelessly to keep us moving.
The Sanitary and Stormwater division is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving our city's sanitary sewer system and separate stormwater system. The Sanitary and Stormwater engineers evaluate aging infrastructure and the growth of our community to make improvements where necessary. Their work ensures sewer waste is properly disposed of and treated, and that rainwater is properly diverted and treated away from streets and homes. Both of these systems are essential for our community's public health and safety, natural resources and the environment.
The Capital & Development division engineers work to bring new buildings and facilities to life. From building a new fire station to keep our community safe to providing more recreational opportunities with new sports fields and community centers, the engineers in this division deliver a variety of projects around the city.
When you visit a local park or public space in Hillsboro, there's a high chance an engineer had a hand in its design and upkeep. The Parks & Recreation Department is home to engineers who plan, design, and maintain the city's recreation spaces. They're the ones making sure your favorite park has safe playgrounds, sustainable landscaping, and recreational facilities. From designing sports fields that can handle heavy use to ensuring the sustainability of our green spaces, these engineers are helping Hillsboro residents stay active, connected, and happy.
Water might seem like something we just "use," but there's a lot of engineering magic happening behind the scenes in our Water Department. Engineers in this department make sure our drinking water is clean, safe, and available to all residents, 24/7. Without these engineers, it's hard to imagine what a day in Hillsboro would look like.
Our engineers ensure your drinking water makes it to your tap through miles of pipelines so it's ready when you need it. As they meet today's water needs, they also plan ahead for the future by improving water system resilience.
Hillsboro is growing, and our Building and Transportation Systems engineers are helping the Community Development Department shape the city's future.
Building Division Engineers ensure that buildings in the City are designed, constructed, and maintained to be safe, and functional. Their work directly impacts the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors by creating environments that support modern living, safety, and sustainability.
Transportation Systems Division engineers are responsible for designing, analyzing, and improving transportation systems to ensure they are safe, efficient, and meet the needs of the community, businesses, and the environment.
Whether you're watching a new building rise or driving through a new development, it's the engineers in this department who are planning the city's growth while keeping things safe and sustainable.
This week, we're also celebrating the women engineers who are shaping the future of our city. They're breaking barriers in fields once dominated by men and paving the way for future generations of women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). With their ingenuity and passion, these trailblazers are making a lasting impact on the community.
Happy National Engineers Week!
