Brooke A. Gillar, partner in Lowenstein Sandler's Transactions & Advisory Group, has been recognized by Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) as its July 2026 Volunteer of the Month.
VLJ partners with volunteers to deliver free civil legal help that protects rights, expands opportunity, drives economic mobility, and strengthens communities.
Gillar's pro bono work focuses on advocating on behalf of the transgender community by guiding individuals through the often-challenging process of securing a name change that matches their gender identity. She began this work several years ago through the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (now Advocates for Trans Equality) and has continued seamlessly at VLJ through its PRIDE Name Change Program, donating over 560 hours of pro bono service to name change clients since 2019.
Gillar says: "The clients we service through VLJ are able to receive legal recognition of a name that matches their gender identity. This is a truly remarkable, life-changing milestone and event for these clients. It is so meaningful to be able to assist people who do not have the means to navigate the legal process on their own, and to help them realize this highly significant watershed moment in their lives."
