Clay County, FL. - Clay County has selected 13 candidates to advance to the interview phase of its fire chief recruitment process.
The County received 42 applications, which ranged from internal to the organization, across the state, and nationwide. The candidates were evaluated based on executive leadership, fire and EMS experience, organizational complexity, strategic planning, fiscal management, emergency management, labor relations, education and professional credentials, and communication experience.

During the next phase, an interview panel will independently evaluate the candidates and recommend three finalists to the County Manager, who will make the final selection for Clay County's next fire chief.
Background:
Chief Lorin Mock announced his retirement in August, after more than 16 years leading the department. He will officially retire in Spring, 2027. Chief Mock leaves a legacy of modernizing Clay County Fire Rescue through expanded emergency response capabilities, firefighter wellness initiatives, Community Paramedicine, and a $65 million investment in public safety facilities and infrastructure. Chief Mock joined Clay County Fire Rescue in 2009 after he served for 27 years with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, where he held senior leadership positions in fire operations and emergency management.
