LLUCH nurse selected as Fellow of the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses

Scarlett Czarnecki, MSN, RN, CPHON, director of patient care for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Service Line and the Child Life Department, has been selected as a Fellow of the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (FAPHON). This distinguished honor recognizes her as one of only four nurse leaders nationwide inducted into the 2025 Class of Fellows.

"This recognition is a reflection of Scarlett's deep commitment, not only to her patients and employees, but also to the entire field of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing," said Peter Baker, senior vice president and administrator of Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. "We are proud of her leadership and grateful for the inspiration she brings to our organization and beyond."

Scarlett, left, often finds herself at the patient bedside doing whatever she can to make their day a little brighter.

APHON announced the recognition on September 12, honoring Czarnecki alongside Kristin Belderson, Amy Haskamp, and Janice Nuuhiwa. The FAPHON designation is the highest honor awarded by APHON, recognizing extraordinary leadership, service, and vision in pediatric hematology/oncology nursing. This honor marks the first time an LLUCH nurse has received this designation.

"The FAPHON designation represents the highest level of leadership, service, and vision within our specialty," said APHON President Dyane Bunnell, DNP, APRN, AOCNS®, CPON®, NPD-BC. "Kristin, Scarlett, Amy, and Janice embody the very best of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing, and APHON is honored to recognize their extraordinary contributions."

For over two decades, Czarnecki has served as a dedicated pediatric hematology/oncology nurse in the inpatient and outpatient settings, where her leadership, research, and advocacy have made a lasting impact on patients, families, and colleagues. Her contributions have advanced evidence-based practice, strengthened education for nurses, and improved care outcomes for children and young adults facing cancer and blood disorders.

Since its establishment, the FAPHON program has recognized trailblazing nurse leaders whose work elevates the profession and advances APHON's mission to support and empower nurses in delivering the highest standard of care.
