September Is National Preparedness Month

Emergencies don't send a save-the-date. Whether it's wildfire, earthquake, flooding, or severe weather, the best time to prepare is before you need to. This September, take a few simple steps to protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Here's how to get ready:

Stay Informed - Sign Up for AlertMarin

Get real-time emergency alerts sent straight to your phone, email, or landline. AlertMarin notifies you about evacuations, wildfires, severe weather, and other urgent situations happening near you.

It takes less than 2 minutes to sign up. Register at Emergency.MarinCounty.gov

Build a Kit

You may need to survive on your own for at least 72 hours. Put together a basic emergency supply kit with:

  • Water (one gallon per person, per day)

  • Non-perishable food

  • Flashlight and batteries

  • First aid supplies

  • Medications

  • Copies of important documents

  • Cash in small bills

  • Portable phone charger

Don't forget supplies for pets, infants, or family members with specific medical needs.

Make a Plan

Talk with your household before disaster strikes. A good plan covers:

  • Two meeting spots - one near home, one outside your neighborhood

  • An out-of-area contact everyone can check in with

  • Evacuation routes for your area

  • What to do with pets

Write it down and make sure every family member has a copy.

Know Your Neighbors

In an emergency, neighbors are often the first responders. Take time this month to:

  • Introduce yourself to neighbors you haven't met

  • Identify anyone nearby who may need extra help (older adults, people with disabilities, families with young kids)

  • Share contact info and agree on how you'll check on each other

  • Consider joining or starting a neighborhood preparedness group

Come Talk to Us

Stop by one of these upcoming events to chat with our team, ask questions, and pick up preparedness resources in person:

  • Movies in the Park - Sun Valley Park, Friday 9/11

  • Movies in the Park - Terra Linda Park, Friday 9/25

  • Canal Community Fair - Albert J. Boro Community Center, Saturday 9/26, 2-5 PM

Preparedness isn't a one-time task, it's a habit. Start with one step this week, and build from there.
