Representative Derek Tran Proposes Amendment to Account for Spike in Energy Costs Caused by “One Big Beautiful Bill”

Washington, DC - U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) introduced an amendment to account for hikes in home energy costs following the passage of President Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill.' Tran proposed the amendment to H.R. 4533, the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which allocates federal funding for energy security, water infrastructure, and other critical investments in our nation's infrastructure. The Republican majority on the House Rules Committee refused to allow a full vote on the amendment on the House floor.

Tran's amendment would have required the Department of Energy to study the impact of President Trump's rollback of clean energy tax creditson the average consumer's energy bills.

"My constituents in Orange and LA counties face some of the highest costs in the country, especially on basic necessities like utilities. My commonsense amendment would have provided a critical tool for our government to monitor consumer energy price hikes and take action to bring costs down. I'm disappointed that House Republicans refused to consider this amendment that would give our hard-working families the answers they deserve about why their utility bills are so high," said Representative Tran. "Drastic cuts to the Resident Clean Energy Tax Credit limit consumer choices and drive up energy prices for millions nationwide. American families deserve to know the true costs of the 'Big Beautiful Bill' on their energy bills."

Since taking office, Representative Tran has been focused on solving the cost-of-living crisis and championed legislation to lower prices for working families. Alongside Representatives Hillary Scholten (MI-03) and Greg Landsman (OH-01), Tran introduced the Toll of Tariffs Act,which would assess the impacts of President Trump's trade policies on the cost of goods for everyday American families. In July, as part of the Congressional Dads Caucus's 'Babies Over Billionaires' initiative, he introduced the Baby Food Tax Relief Actto exempt essential baby food products-including highchairs, bottles, and formula-from President Trump's tariffs. Tran also joined Representative Kathy Castor (FL-14) to introduce the Keep Kids Covered Act, which would ensure uninterrupted access to affordable health care for all children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. He has consistently rejected legislation that would increase the cost of basic necessities like food and health care, including voting againstthe Republican budget proposal that would eliminate billions in funding for Medicaid and SNAP.

Tran recently launched the Congressional Lowering Costs Caucuswith Representatives Scholten and Landsman, where he will continue to work with his colleagues to develop solutions to make life more affordable for American families. Tran also serves on the New Democrat Coalition's Economic Growth and Cost of Living Working Group and the Congressional Dads Caucus, which aims to ease the cost burden on working parents by advocating for the expanded child tax credit, affordable child care, and paid family leave.
