The new Permanent Representative of Chile to the OAS, José Miguel Castro, presented his credentials to Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin during a ceremony held at the Organization's headquarters in Washington, DC.
During his remarks, Ambassador Castro highlighted "the relevance of the OAS" in the hemisphere and said his country "will always be committed to the promotion and defense of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights; enduring principles of our foreign policy and fundamental pillars of the inter-American system."
In addition, the new Permanent Representative of Chile said he begins this new stage "with conviction, a sense of responsibility, and full willingness to work with all OAS member states in favor of a safer, more stable, and more prosperous region for its citizens."
For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS highlighted that "the relationship between Chile and the Organization of American States is grounded in a firm and shared understanding of the importance of dialogue, respect for international law, and joint efforts to address the challenges facing our region."
At the conclusion of his remarks, the leader of the hemispheric organization addressed Ambassador Castro, stating: "I am confident that your tenure will provide continuity to your country's commitment-and its long-standing tradition-of constructive engagement within this Organization, alongside our colleagues, the member states, and the secretariat."
Ambassador Castro is a veterinarian by profession and a member of his country's legislature. He has also served as President of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.
