Washington, D.C., 3 March 2026 (PAHO)- The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), has launched the Spanish version of the course "Integrating Simulation and Technology in Nursing and Midwifery Education," an initiative aimed at strengthening teaching competencies and promoting innovation in the education of health personnel. The course provides practical tools to integrate clinical simulation and digital technologies into teaching-learning processes, contributing to improved quality in nursing and midwifery education. The strategic incorporation of these methodologies helps expand access to education, overcome geographic barriers, and offer more dynamic learning experiences in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
This initiative responds to the need to strengthen the capacities of faculty members and tutors in a context where information and communication technologies have transformed educational models. The use of virtual and simulation-based environments facilitates competency development, with the goal of increasing the availability and appropriate distribution of qualified professionals who contribute to building resilient health systems.
"The transformation of nursing and midwifery education requires the incorporation of innovative methodologies that enable the safe and effective development of competencies. This course aims to support faculty and educational institutions in the strategic integration of simulation and digital technologies, expanding learning opportunities and contributing to strengthening the quality of health workforce education in the Region", said Benjamín Puertas, Unit Chief, Human Resources for Health, PAHO.
The self-learning course, with an estimated duration of 24 hours, is structured in seven modules that combine theoretical content with practical applications. It is intended for registered nurses and midwives, higher education faculty, tutors and educators in health care settings, as well as simulation technicians.
The content was developed by experts from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for International Nursing, and the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, Collaborating Centre for Nursing Human Resources Development and Patient Safety.
Participants who successfully complete all modules and pass the assessments will receive an electronic certificate issued by PAHO's Virtual Campus for Public Health.
The course is free of charge and is now available in both Spanish and English on the Virtual Campus for Public Health.
