CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that replacement of the bridge carrying Sacramento Boulevard over the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290), in Chicago, will begin, weather permitting, Thursday, Oct. 8.
The work will initially require shoulder closures and intermittent overnight lane closures in both direction of I-290 at Sacramento Boulevard to accommodate the installation of protective shielding under the bridge.
Starting in mid-October, Sacramento Boulevard will be closed between Congress Parkway and Van Buren Street. Northbound traffic will be detoured via Congress Parkway, California Avenue and Van Buren Street. The southbound detour will use Jackson Boulevard, California Avenue and Harrison Street. The public also should expect occasional overnight lane closures on I-290 at Sacramento Avenue during construction.
The $13.4 million project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2028.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
