San Mateo County - Caltrans will begin construction on the State Route 82 (El Camino Real) Roadway Renewal Project this winter, marking a major rehabilitation to a vital section of SR-82 traversing Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, and Millbrae.
Over the coming months and years, the $173 million State Highway Operations and Protection Program (SHOPP) effort will deliver critical infrastructure upgrades, including improved visibility for drivers, enhanced drainage to mitigate localized flooding, and upgraded sidewalks, curb ramps, and pedestrian facilities to ensure full compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. Aging eucalyptus trees along the sidewalks will also be removed, and the canopy reinvigorated with more than 300 new trees, preserving the historic significance of the Howard Ralston Eucalyptus Rows.
"This project displays significant community engagement and strong collaboration with local cities," said Caltrans Acting District 4 Director Dave Ambuehl. "By improving safety and accessibility along historic El Camino Real, we are strengthening the corridor in a way that honors our past while planning responsibly for our future."
A groundbreaking ceremony took place this morning on El Camino Real in Burlingame where members of the public celebrated this milestone alongside local elected officials and Caltrans representatives.
"This project reflects the very best of regional collaboration. Caltrans, PG&E, and the City of Burlingame - all of whom engaged with and listened closely to residents - worked shoulder-to- shoulder to develop a thoughtful plan that improves safety, enhances accessibility, and preserves the treasured character of El Camino Real. I'm proud of the professionalism and partnership between Caltrans, PG&E, and the City of Burlingame that made this milestone possible," said Burlingame Mayor Peter Stevenson.
Caltrans remains committed to maintaining the El Camino Real as a safe, accessible, and reliable transportation corridor for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, helping preserve both the historic significance and the functional importance of SR-82 for communities along the Peninsula.
