Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente Meets with Mexico's Ambassadors in the Middle East

This morning, Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente held a virtual meeting with Mexico's ambassadors in the Middle East to get a firsthand account of conditions in each country and to strengthen the security measures in place to protect Mexican nationals in the region.

Secretary De la Fuente reiterated that the safety and wellbeing of all Mexicans - both residents and those in transit, many of whom are stranded due to flight cancellations - remains the top priority. To date, all requests for consular protection and assistance have been addressed, and there are no reports of anyone having been physical harmed.

The Foreign Secretary commended the work carried out by Mexico's diplomats in the region and said that their safety and that of their families is equally important. In addition, he asked them to maintain and deepen their diplomatic relationships with local authorities.

In many countries of the region, airspace remains closed. Therefore, the evacuation protocols also include safe overland routes for those who wish to use them, when conditions permit. There is a registry of Mexican nationals residing in each country.

The Ministry's Consular Protection division reiterates that, for the time being, all travel to the region by any means should be avoided. People are advised to shelter in place, minimize movement, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Participating in the meeting were Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado; Chief of Staff Roberto de León; Director General for Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East Aníbal Gómez; and Director General of Consular Protection Vanessa Calva.

Also present were Mexico's ambassadors and chargés d'affaires in the region: Guillermo Puente Ordorica, Ambassador to Iran; Mauricio Escanero Figueroa, Ambassador to Israel; Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora, Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates; Eduardo Peña Haller, Ambassador to Kuwait; Guillermo Ordorica Robles, Ambassador to Qatar; Jacob Prado González, Ambassador to Jordan; Francisco Romero Bock, Ambassador to Lebanon; Pedro Blanco Pérez, Head of the Representative Office in Palestine; Guillermo Gutiérrez Nieto, Chargé d'Affaires in Saudi Arabia; and Héctor Ortega Nieto, Chargé d'Affaires in Egypt.
