WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement ahead of the start of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly:
"As countries gather in New York, it is critical that the United States and others around the world counter the People's Republic of China's misrepresentation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. This resolution, which was passed in 1971, deals solely with the representation of the "China" seat at the United Nations. It does not make any statements on Taiwan's political status or its ability to engage with United Nations entities. China has sought to falsely conflate UNGA Resolution 2758 with its "One China Principle" and rewrite official UN documents to support its illegitimate claims to Taiwan.
"The United States will continue to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations and reject China's efforts to rewrite history and diplomatically isolate Taiwan. Earlier this year, working with our colleagues in the House and Senate, we introduced a resolution clarifying America's longstanding One China Policy and pushing back against China's false representations of UNGA Resolution 2758. We hope we can pass Senate Resolution 86 this Congress and send a strong message of support for our friends in Taiwan."
