Richardson Voters Approve All 2026 Bond and Charter Election Propositions

Unofficial election results show Richardson voters approved all five propositions in the City's 2026 Bond Election and all 50 measures in the 2026 Charter Amendment Election held Saturday, May 2. The bond election totals $223.4 million and is structured with no anticipated increase to the City's property tax rate. The charter election included 50 separate propositions covering technical updates as well as governance and transparency provisions.

Bond Election
Based on the unofficial returns, between 4,377 and 4,400 ballots were cast on the five bond propositions, with each measure receiving majority support.

Unofficial Results by Proposition (Bond Election)

  • Proposition A (Streets) received 3,193 votes in favor and 1,203 against
  • Proposition B (Public Buildings) received 3,162 votes in favor and 1,238 against
  • Proposition C (Parks and Recreation) received 2,943 votes in favor and 1,445 against
  • Proposition D (Sidewalks) received 3,055 votes in favor and 1,340 against; and
  • Proposition E (Drainage) received 3,218 votes in favor and 1,159 against.

The approved bond program includes funding for five categories of projects across the city:

  • $132.2 million for streets,
  • $36 million for public buildings,
  • $22.2 million for parks and recreation,
  • $16.5 million for sidewalks and
  • $16.5 million for drainage improvements.

Proposition A will fund street reconstruction, alley replacement, traffic signal upgrades, school zone flasher replacement, ADA-related intersection improvements and active transportation improvements.

Proposition B supports public safety facilities, including a new Fire Apparatus Building, additions and renovations at Fire Station No. 6, and design and authorization for future construction of Fire Station No. 7.

Proposition C focuses on parks and recreation improvements such as aquatic facility projects, playground renovations and the Breckinridge Park pedestrian bridge and trail connection.

Proposition D addresses sidewalk rehabilitation and sidewalk gap projects.

Proposition E funds drainage and erosion control projects, including Lois Branch channel improvements.

The 2026 Bond Election was developed through public briefings, community feedback and two public hearings, and is not anticipated to increase the current property tax rate.

Charter Election
Unofficial results also show that all 50 charter amendment propositions were approved. Vote totals on the charter measures ranged from 3,947 to 4,278 ballots cast, depending on the proposition. Support ranged from about 62 percent to 92 percent, with the strongest approval recorded for Proposition J, related to district residency requirements for Council Places 1 through 4, and the narrowest margin recorded for Proposition D, related to City Council compensation.

The 2026 Charter Amendment Election was the result of the City's required 10-year charter review process. Richardson's Charter requires the City Council to appoint a commission at least once every 10 years to review the Charter and recommend any changes it deems necessary.

An 11-member Charter Review Commission met from January through May 2025 to evaluate all 19 articles of the Charter and develop recommendations that were later considered by the City Council.

Examples of the approved charter amendments include requiring candidates for Council Places 1 through 4 to live in their district for at least one year before the election and throughout their term, adding a requirement for the City Council to maintain and review a code of ethics at least every two years, establishing continuity-of-government provisions for emergencies, and adding a resign-to-run provision for Council members who become candidates for another elected office. Other approved amendments address technical updates, clarification of procedures, and removal or reorganization of outdated language.

The election results remain unofficial until canvassed by the Richardson City Council at a meeting scheduled to take place on May 11.
