Calls on Montanans to learn, engage, and serve
Governor's Office
HELENA, Mont. - Governor Greg Gianforte today joined the Montana 250 Commission and ServeMontana to launch "Two Lights Montana," a statewide initiative aimed at encouraging Montanans to engage in a year of learning, civic participation, and community service during the semiquincentennial of the United States.
"As we celebrate 250 years of America, it's a time to reflect on our founding principles and put them into action," Gov. Gianforte said. "Paul Revere's lanterns were a signal to act. Let our 'Two Lights Montana' initiative be a signal to the rest of the nation that Montana still knows what it means to be an American in the 21st century."

Inspired by Paul Revere's ride and the two lights signal from the Old North Church in 1775, the initiative is built on three central pillars: Learn, Engage, and Serve. The goal is to encourage Montanans to learn more about American history by exploring foundational texts and visiting landmarks like the Montana Heritage Center and participating in local government by attending public meetings, whether in person or online.
The final pillar, Serve, asks Montanans to serve their community through volunteer opportunities, culminating in "Montana Makes a Difference Day" on October 24, 2026. On this day, citizens are asked to dedicate time to a community service organization, by volunteering at a local food bank, church, or other organization.
"Two Lights Montana is designed to draw people closer - to their history, to their community, and to one another," Chris Averill, Montana 250 Chair, said. "We want all Montanans to embark on a journey of discovery and growth during this milestone year in America's history. By learning, engaging, and serving others, we live up to the demands of civic life in our constitutional republic, and we participate in the pursuit of happiness that inspired our Founders 250 years ago."
As Montanans participate in Two Lights activities, they are encouraged to share their experience on social media using the hashtag #TwoLightsMT. The Montana 250 Commission will be monitoring the hashtag to highlight and share stories on its own social media platforms as people learn, engage, and serve.
"America Gives 250 is one of the largest volunteer efforts in history, and each of us can be a part of it," Sarah Sadowski, Director of ServeMontana, said. "Consider your unique gifts, skills, and talents then serve. Visit one of Montana's local United Ways websites, search JustServe.org, or call your favorite local organization to connect with an opportunity. Volunteering is the great way to honor America's 250th, bring a friend, a family member, or sign yourself up and you will meet new people."
The governor concluded, "To all Montanans: Let's ride together into this 250th anniversary, not as spectators, but as the authors of America's next great chapter."
