BTU scientist honoured with the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Award for outstanding publication

13.01.2025

For their article "Safety of Programmable Logic Controllers and Related Systems: Today and Tomorrow" Dr.-Ing. Wael Alsabbagh and Prof. Dr. Peter Langendörfer they were awarded the IEEE Outstanding Publication Award.

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) play an indispensable role in critical infrastructures and industrial control systems. However, with the increasing integration of PLC-based applications into external networks such as the Internet, these systems face new challenges as they are exposed to potential attacks. To ensure the security of these systems, a comprehensive understanding of their vulnerabilities, potential threats and effective countermeasures is essential.

A research team at the IHP - Leibniz-Institute for Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics in Frankfurt (Oder), led by Prof. Dr Peter Langendörfer, Head of the Cyber Physical System Engineering Department and Chair of Wireless Systems at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, has dedicated itself to this topic.

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the vulnerabilities of industrial control systems as well as potential threats and attacks. It also highlights security solutions, including digital forensics, and identifies future research directions to successfully defend against attacks. "Our article provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the vulnerabilities and threats to industrial control systems and discusses further research directions aimed at successfully preventing attacks in the future. The importance of our article stems primarily from the fact that the security of industrial control systems can hardly be overestimated in the current situation," emphasises Prof. Langendörfer.

The renowned Industrial Electronics Society presented the award as part of the 50th IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON) conference in November 2024. IECON provides an international platform for experts and engineers to exchange the latest research findings and forward-looking ideas in areas such as smart grids, robotics, power electronics and interdisciplinary technologies.

The award emphasises the excellence and relevance of research at IHP and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. It also demonstrates the importance of innovative approaches to strengthen the resilience and security of industrial systems in an increasingly digitalised world.
