Grants, NM - As a result of the high fire danger, Stage II Fire Restrictions are being implemented in El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments, effective June 22, 2026. These restrictions are necessary to reduce the risk of fire to protect public health and safety, and to protect National Park Service lands, resources, and facilities during the current period of increased fire danger.
Pursuant to Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, sections 1.S{a)(l ), 1.S(a)(3), 2.13{c) and 2.21{a), the following acts are prohibited within El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments:

Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, including within a developed recreation site or improved site (36 CFR 2.13(a)). Exception: The use of liquid petroleum or LPG fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices is allowed as long as such devices meet the fire underwriter's specifications for safety.

Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle (36 CFR 2.21(a)).

Welding or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame is prohibited.

Operating or using any internal combustion engine off paved or graveled roads is prohibited.

Generators are allowed if equipped with an approved spark arresting device and used in an area that is barren or clear of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the generator.

The use of all firearms and explosives are prohibited, including but not limited to fuses or blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, exploding targets, and tracers or incendiary ammunition.
Exemptions are provided for fire crew resources conducting fire management activities.
This order shall be in effect beginning June 22, 2026, and shall remain in effect until rescinded. Violation of these prohibited acts is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 and/or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
