WYDOT warns of cloned vehicle purchasing websites

STATEWIDE - The Wyoming Department of Transportation wants to warn the public about potential scams related to buying vehicles, trailers or equipment online.

WYDOT's investigators with the Motor Vehicle Services Compliance and Investigation division have seen increases in fraudulent websites posing as legitimate Wyoming dealers, auctioneers and businesses.

It is a common scammer tactic to clone legitimate websites to trick unsuspecting buyers into purchasing items that may not exist or to steal personal and payment information. These websites match the real ones in design and graphics but not in URL or other key details.

Scammers will post deals on these websites that prove too good to be true. But once the auction closes and the money is wired, it is often too late to get justice for victims.

"Buying online is convenient, but carries risks for fraud and scams," said Shannon Ferree, Investigation Supervisor with WYDOT Compliance and Investigation. "The auction closes, you think you just got a great deal on a car, and then the money is gone, and the car doesn't even exist."

Buying online? Shop smart with these tips:

· Don't assume the top result on your search engine is the most legitimate option. Check URLs carefully to find official business websites. You can also verify registered dealers on WYDOT's website: http://dot.state.wy.us/home/vehicle_bus_regulation/new-business.html.

· Once money is wired, it's almost impossible to get back. Opt for other payment methods whenever feasible.

· If possible, have someone you trust view the item in person if you are unable to do so, especially before money changes hands.

WYDOT works closely with law enforcement and website hosts to take down the fraudulent webpages, but they are often hosted outside of the United States, which can make the process more challenging.
