The MD|DC Credit Union Association has named NIHFCU Board Chair Steven Berkowitz as the 2025 Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his 35 years of dedication, leadership, and unwavering service to the credit union.

"As Chairman of the Board, Steven has exemplified the very best of credit union leadership. He's thoughtful, visionary and deeply grounded in service," said NIHFCU President and CEO Rick Wieczorek. "His decades of dedication have helped shape NIHFCU into a trusted financial institution that consistently puts the needs of its members first."
During Berkowitz's tenure on the Board, NIHFCU has grown from $100 million in assets to over $800 million. He has championed initiatives that support members and strengthen the organization, including:
"Steven's passion and steady leadership have been a guiding force through both challenges and successes," said NIHFCU Board Treasurer Don Christoferson. "In times of uncertainty, he brings calm and confidence. He's always prepared, always listens and is incredibly dedicated."
Tim Duvall, NIHFCU Senior Vice President and CFO, attributes the credit union's consistent growth to Berkowitz's inclusive leadership style, noting, "His calm, inclusive approach encourages collaboration and keeps us on course."
Laura Gent, NIHFCU Board Vice Chair describes Berkowitz as "the heart and soul of the credit union movement," highlighting his commitment and passion.
