Writing Marathon Set for Sept. 17

The Northern Shores Storywork Project, in conjunction with Sigma Tau Delta, is hosting The Marquette Writing Marathon at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 17.

Hosted on the same night as Music on Third Street, the goal of the marathon is to get writers immersed in and inspired by the unique culture in Marquette.

The marathon will start at Kognisjon Bryggeri, before participants split off into groups of two or three to write in 10-minute "sprints" in a variety of locations around North Third Street. Marathoners are given an opportunity to share their work, reconnect with the larger group, and earn door prizes at 7 p.m. at The Crib to conclude the event. Participants will receive a free journal to use, made by members of Sigma Tau Delta.

Richard Louth, director of the South Eastern Louisiana Project Site, hosted the first writing marathon in New Orleans over 20 years ago. The idea is to get people out onto the streets, to immerse themselves in the culture where they are, and give them a chance to write and reflect on place.

"Our writing project site tries to engage teachers in things that reflect the uniqueness of our place," said Kel Sassi, NMU professor and director of the Northern Shores Storywork Project. "We live in such an inspiring place for the arts, so we wanted to start a writing marathon in Marquette, too."

Educators, students and community members are all welcome to participate.

"We're hoping for a diverse group of participants," Sassi said.
