Resident votes open in Alton renewal ballot

Proposals include a new library, retail parade and supermarket, GP surgery, community spaces and public realm improvements for everyone, alongside plans for high-quality new homes and major repairs to some existing blocks. 

The proposal includes plans to build up to 650 new homes on the Alton with 57 per cent as affordable homes, including family-sized homes prioritised for Alton residents facing overcrowding. Development will be phased to do the work in the best order to reduce noise and disruption.

The ballot is open until 16 October for eligible residents living on the Alton and votes can be sent in by post, online or phone.

If residents vote 'Yes' for the new plans, the proposals will go ahead.

Council rents are set boroughwide and we guarantee this will continue, so this means your rent will not go up as a direct result of the regeneration scheme. The GLA will fund some of the scheme.

If residents vote 'No' there will be no big changes to the estate - the old homes will stay and the proposals outlined above will not go ahead. However we will complete the other improvements happening as part of the initial Alton Renewal Plan.

Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing said: "This ballot is a crucial moment for the Alton as it gives local residents the opportunity to have the final say on the regeneration proposals, particularly the new homes and improved community facilities.

"I encourage everyone who has a vote to take time to look at the plans and cast their vote by 16 October - your voice is vital to determine the future direction of your estate." 

Over the past year, the council has been delivering local improvements as part of the initial phase of the Alton Renewal Plan. These include opening the Roehampton Family Hub, bringing the council's annual jobs fair to Roehampton this year, installing outdoor murals designed and painted by residents, expanding the community mini-bus service and resurfacing roads and pavements.

The ballot is being run independently by Civica Election Services, following rules set by the Greater London Authority (GLA).
