Gilbert, Ariz. - Just before 8:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, Gilbert Police officers responded to the 900 block of South Deerfield Lane following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old male victim with serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Officers learned that 21-year-old Rael Sanchez, a relative of one of the homeowners, was at the home visiting family at the same time as the 16-year-old victim who was visiting his girlfriend.
After the shooting, Sanchez allegedly fled from the area in a vehicle. Witnesses also reported that Sanchez had allegedly been acting erratically prior to the incident and was observed in possession of a firearm.
After securing the scene, Gilbert Police detectives continued their investigation by collecting evidence and obtaining statements from witnesses at the home. Efforts to locate Sanchez immediately began as detectives pursued all available leads.
On December 14, 2025, just before 10:00 AM, Sanchez was located by Phoenix Police officers through his involvement in an unrelated incident in Phoenix. He was transported to a nearby hospital and upon his release, Gilbert Police detectives took Sanchez into custody.
Sanchez was arrested and booked into the custody of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on one charge of A.R.S. ยง 13-1104(A)(2), Attempted Second Degree Murder.
The 16-year-old victim remains in critical condition. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and family during this difficult time.
Charged or submitted offenses are merely allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent until pleading guilty or being found guilty.
