J-Blue Credits Generated Around KIX to Support Carbon Offsetting at the 45th National Convention for Abundantly Productive Sea

Kansai Airports is pleased to announce that it will provide 75 tons of its J-Blue Credits to the 45th National Convention for the Development of an Abundantly Productive Sea - Osaka Convention: Naniwa, the Sea of Abundant Marine Life. The credits are planned to be used to offset CO2 emissions generated through the convention, marking the first-ever use of J-Blue Credits at the Convention.

Carbon stored in the ocean through biological processes is known as blue carbon and has been attracting attention as a new means of CO2 absorption. Along most of the seawalls surrounding the islands of Kansai International Airport (KIX), gently sloped stone revetments have been adopted, and Kansai Airports has worked for many years to create and maintain rich seaweed-bed environments through activities such as seaweed propagation, protection and cultivation, and environmental monitoring surveys. In recognition of the CO2 absorption capacity of these seaweed beds, Kansai Airports has been certified for J-Blue Credits*¹ twice to date. A portion of these credits will be provided to the Osaka Prefectural Government, which serves as the convention secretariat.

Today, at the Osaka Prefectural Government Sakishima Building, Kansai Airports presented a certificate for 75 tons of J-Blue Credits to Executive Committee for the 45th National Convention for the Development of an Abundantly Productive Sea in Osaka Prefecture. The convention organizers estimate that 75 tons of CO2 emissions will be generated through activities associated with the event, including electricity consumption at the venues, maritime welcome events, and transportation and accommodation for participants. By providing an equivalent amount of J-Blue Credits, Kansai Airports will help make the convention carbon neutral.*²

Since its construction, KIX has pursued coexistence and harmony with the surrounding marine environment. The opportunity to utilize J-Blue Credits generated through these environmental initiatives in support of the convention's vision of "passing on rich and abundant seas to future generations" is particularly meaningful and will further strengthen the convention's environmental legacy.
Kansai Airports Group will continue working with local communities and stakeholders to advance initiatives that reduce environmental impacts and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

Notes
*¹ Credits certified, issued, and administered by the Japan Blue Economy Association (JBE). Credits are certified and issued following examination and verification by an independent third-party committee separate from JBE.

*² The provision of J-Blue Credits and the associated carbon offsetting will be implemented on the assumption that all programs of the convention are carried out as planned.
