Congressman Shri Thanedar Statement on Supreme Court Safeguarding Birthright Citizenship

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) released the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

"The Supreme Court did what the Constitution requires: it affirmed that people born in the United States are American citizens," said Rep. Thanedar. "This is a major win for civil rights and the rule of law.

But we should not ignore how close this decision was. A 6-3 ruling on such a clear constitutional protection is a reminder of how fragile our rights can be when MAGA extremists are determined to rewrite them.

It is critical that Democrats regain the Senate as soon as possible. We must ensure that President Trump does not get to appoint another justice that will only serve his political interests. We need justices who will protect the rights of the American people, not be a rubber stamp for Trump."

The 14th Amendment was written after the Civil War to ensure that formerly enslaved Black Americans could not have their citizenship questioned or denied because of their race. More than 150 years later, Donald Trump and far-right conservatives tried to attack that same constitutional protection in order to target immigrant families and children born in this country. As America approaches its 250th birthday, this ruling is a reminder that our Constitution is stronger than Trump's hate.

Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes. As a champion for working families, Shri is committed to advancing economic opportunities, education, healthcare access, and entrepreneurship for underserved communities. Drawing from his journey from poverty to success, he works tirelessly to uplift Metro Detroit, ensuring every resident has the resources and support they need to thrive.
