WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) released the following statement after the House passed (390-9) the Housing for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 6644), a bipartisan package of bills to clear the pathway to build more housing nationwide.
"Housing supply is not meeting the need in eastern Connecticut and across the country. It's a crisis that is driving up costs and cutting people out of home ownership. The number one way to fix this is to build more homes," Courtney said. "The Housing for the 21st Century Act is a solid, commonsense package of bills to generate new housing construction, prevent homelessness, and bring the dream of homeownership back within reach for more Americans. People in eastern Connecticut have been screaming out for more housing to support the hiring surge at the Groton shipyard. This bill is a huge step forward by Congress to answer those calls. The Senate should not wait to pass it."
The Housing for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 6644) is supported by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Realtors, Habitat for Humanity, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and over 50 total organizations.

Yesterday, the Day newspaper reported the Electric Boat is planning to hire 8,000 new workers in 2026, a hiring surge which increases the demand for new housing construction in eastern Connecticut.
In the FY2026 budget, Congressman Courtney secured $2.5 million to support housing development projects in Connecticut's Second District.
