Southeast Missouri State University will host its annual Low Lecture featuring Dr. Brian L. Ott, distinguished professor at Missouri State University, at 2 p.m. April 29 in the University Center Ballroom B.
The annual Low Lecture brings scholars and thought leaders to SEMO to share research and insights on issues relevant to communication, culture and society.
Ott will present "Digital Beings: How the Structural Biases of Digital Media Shape Our Habits of Mind," a lecture examining how the widespread presence of digital media is influencing the way people communicate, interact and think.
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Ott join us for the Annual Low Lecture this year," said Dr. Lesli Pace, chair and professor of the Department of Communication Studies and Modern Languages. "His work on the implications of digital media is timely, practical and incredibly interesting."
According to Ott, society is experiencing a major paradigm shift driven by rapidly changing media environments. His lecture will explore how the near-constant presence of digital media is shaping human behavior and what those changes may mean for individuals and communities.
"Students who attend lectures like this one not only have an opportunity to hear about interesting research from an expert, but they are also introduced to diverse perspectives, see direct applications of research into practice, and are often inspired to challenge themselves by people working in our discipline," said Pace.
The event is free and open to the public.
