East-Central Georgia: Crews scheduled to ride routes Sunday

Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation continues to monitor the weather to determine potential impacts of a system that may bring wintry precipitation to District 2 (east-central Georgia) on Sunday.

Based on the latest forecast, crews are scheduled to ride routes south of Interstate 20 beginning Sunday at 6:00 a.m. Road conditions will be monitored, and if hazardous spots are discovered, crews will apply salt.

Current forecasts suggest the temperature will not drop low enough during the event for precipitation to freeze to the road surface. However, temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing Sunday night, meaning black ice may form. Crews will continue riding routes late Sunday afternoon. If they notice any locations that are struggling to dry, they will apply salt to lower the risk of freezing.

Crews will need to slow down to apply salt. Drivers are advised to use caution around Georgia DOT trucks and give extra space.

Our plans are based on current weather reports and are subject to change. Georgia DOT will continue to monitor the weather.

All district maintenance personnel are on call and prepared to salt, plow, or brine roads as needed.
