The spinal surgery program at Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica has introduced a minimally invasive robotic surgical system that enables surgeons to perform spinal procedures with greater safety and accuracy than traditional methods.
ExcelsiusGPS, an advanced robotic navigation platform from Globus Medical, brings the latest in minimally invasive spine surgery to west Georgia, giving patients access to world-class care close to home. The system allows for smaller incisions, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. It also can reduce radiation exposure for both patients and surgical teams.
ExcelsiusGPS can be used independently or paired with Excelsius3D, a smart imaging platform that provides surgeons with high-quality 3D images, fluoroscopy and digital radiography during surgery. Together, the systems enhance accuracy and flexibility, giving surgeons enhanced visualization of patient anatomy when needed.
"This is truly an investment in our patients and our community," said David Early, MBA, MHA, FACHE, administrator for Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica. "By bringing this advancement here, we're ensuring people no longer have to travel to larger cities to receive world-class spine care. These systems equip our surgeons with the tools to perform highly delicate procedures with greater precision - ultimately leading to better outcomes for our patients."
The ExcelsiusGPS is most often used to guide the placement of screws in the spine, a critical step for stabilizing and correcting conditions like scoliosis, degenerative disc disease and spinal fractures. It also supports interbody navigation and other procedures requiring high accuracy, including lumbar interbody fusions, sacroiliac joint fusions and other minimally invasive treatments.
Tanner Health is one of only eight health systems in the state of Georgia to have the ExcelsiusGPS, and board-certified orthopedic surgeon Krishna Gumidyala, MD, is leading the use of the platform for the organization.
"This technology is transforming the way spine surgery is performed across the country, and we are proud to offer it right here in Villa Rica," Early added. "It's yet another example of Tanner's commitment to bringing leading-edge care directly to the communities we serve."
