  • Mexico's ambassadors and consuls meet to build a shared vision based on the principles of Mexican Humanism and shared prosperity
  • The 37th Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls begins with presentations on priority national agenda items, with remarks from members of Cabinet and the Supreme Court

Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente today inaugurated the 37th Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls (REC 2026) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting serves as a forum where Mexico's representatives around the world and public servants, academics, business leaders, and other key actors engage in roundtable discussions and working sessions. This year's meeting takes place in a regional and international environment undergoing profound changes for diplomacy.

From January 5-7, Mexico's representatives abroad will participate in intensive sessions of reflection, dialogue, and collaborative work, with the goal of building a shared vision for Mexico's foreign policy under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

Speaking to more than 130 ambassadors and consuls, the Foreign Secretary said: "It's clear to everyone that we are going through one of the most complex periods in recent times. The international legal order-the foundation of the multilateral system and peaceful coexistence of the international community-has been seriously disrupted in our region and in other parts of the world, with the use of force endangering international peace and security."

Later in his remarks, he said, "The historic moment we are living in Mexico, under the leadership of our first woman president, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, is delivering strong results. The change charted by the transformation of the country's public life is clear and has a universal aim: to build a society based on democracy, freedom, equality, and shared prosperity."

The Foreign Secretary said that Mexico practices firm and respectful diplomacy, committed to dialogue, peaceful resolution of disputes, and defense of international law.

The first day's agenda included presentations by Hugo Aguilar, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation; General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Secretary of Defense; Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, Secretary of the Navy; Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection; Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Secretary of Culture; Edgar Amador Zamora, Secretary of Finance; and Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, Secretary of Economy.

In 27 working sessions, the participants will address key issues for Mexican diplomacy, including reforms to multilateral institutions, economic and investment promotion, outreach to Mexican communities abroad, and strategies for engagement and deepening ties with different regions of the world, among others.

Secretary De la Fuente reiterated that the 2026 meeting will provide an opportunity for analysis, deliberation, and collective definition of objectives to strengthen Mexico's image, influence, and presence abroad. These objectives will respond to a global environment characterized by constant change and the needs of Mexico's diaspora anywhere in the world.
