Burn ban downgraded to burn restrictions in Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Fire Department Fire Marshal, Kris Cooper, has downgraded the current burn ban order to a burn restriction level. Burn restrictions will be effective August 21 at noon.

While the burn ban is being lifted, burn restrictions remain in place. This does not mean the fire danger has passed or that all outdoor burning is permitted.

The burn ban was enacted June 29, 2026, due to extremely dry fuels, a prolonged lack of significant moisture, multiple wildfires burning in Colorado, and limited firefighting resources.

Conditions since the beginning of this month have improved enough to move from a burn ban to burn restrictions; however, residents and visitors must continue to use caution and comply with restrictions that remain in effect.

The following activities are prohibited during burn restrictions:

• Recreational fires where the fire is not contained in a portable or fixed fireplace or appliance.
• Small engine equipment operation without a properly installed and functioning spark arrestor.
• Outdoor smoking in all city owned parks and open spaces.

A permit is required for the following:

• Model rockets
• Hot work
• Commercial fireworks

Violations of the burn restrictions may result in fines, imprisonment, or both, as allowed by City ordinance.
