The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the news of the first phase of a peace agreement for Gaza. It was agreed that the remaining Israeli hostages will be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and to allow increased humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza, as well as a ceasefire after more than two years of war.
The PES commends the first phase of agreement but underlines the need of further diplomatic work and negotiations to achieve a lasting solution for the region. European Socialists reaffirmed their stands on unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza, and renewed efforts towards a two-state solution - the only viable path to a just and lasting peace.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
"Now it is time to engage in dialogue, to support the civilian population, and to look to the future with hope and determination for a sustainable solution. This agreement must be implemented by both parties and must be accompanied by the immediate lifting of all restrictions on life-saving humanitarian aid to Gaza. These atrocities can never be repeated.
We must not lose sight of the long-term goal: a peaceful, just and long-lasting solution through the establishment of a Palestinian state, with a reformed Palestinian Authority that also takes over civil administration in Gaza. While we welcome any step that brings an end to the violence, we must be honest about the limitations of the current plan. Vague commitments are not enough. Peace requires clarity, accountability, and the political will to address the root causes of this conflict."
